Police investigating the incident said that no shot was heard by people in the vicinity and no source or motive for the incident has been established. The circumstances of the shooting have prompted police to investigate possible connections with a similar incident, reported by Saudi Gazette on Jan. 2, involving a seven-year-old boy who was with his parents in a busy market area of Samta when he was shot. Shoppers said that no one heard a gunshot and police suspected that a silencer-equipped weapon may have been used. The child's injuries were described as “not serious”.
