JEDDAH – Police put an end Tuesday to the activities of a three-man gang of thieves that targeted customers exiting Jeddah banks with large amounts of cash on their persons. The three Africans were caught when they stole a bag containing SR100,000 from a Yemeni resident and fled, only for an observant Saudi to call the victim to his car and engage in a pursuit toward Al-Salama District of the city. A call to police was made during the chase, and by the time officers caught up the victim had managed to hold down the driver of the getaway vehicle, while the two remaining thieves fled on foot. They were later arrested at an apartment following information received from the detained driver. Police believe the gang used false documents to hire cars and carry out their thefts, and investigators are trying to establish their connections to a number of similar incidents around the city. – Okaz/SG

Police nick thief after stolen phone call
By Ibrahim Alawi
JEDDAH – The suspicions of a routine police patrol led to the arrest of a serial telephone thief who targeted patrons to a popular mobile telephone market in Jeddah Tuesday. Officers observing a Nigerian man “acting suspiciously” by approaching members of the public in a “strange and threatening fashion”, asked for proof of his identity, whereupon they found him to be in possession of several expensive telephone sets. The man's activities were then exposed when one of the sets rang, and police found the voice of the owner on the other end of the line demanding the return of his stolen telephone.
