Jet Airways clinches Jotun Cup
By Aijaz Ahmed Khan
JEDDAH – Jet Airways on its maiden entry into the Jeddah Cricket Association (JCA) put up a sensational performance to win the Jotun Premier Cup by defeating favorite Ace Travel by 5 wickets recently at the JCA complex in Usfan.
This tournament was sponsored by Jotun Paints Co. and was organized by JCA.
After winning the toss Ace Travel skipper Syed Mubashir Hussain opted to bat first. It suffered a big jolt as the top order collapsed against the Jet Airways bowlers who reduced it to 14-3. The right arm medium pacer Farooq claimed two wickets and Syed Mohammad Afroz accounted for one.
However the middle order batsmen put up good resistance to put up a respectable total of 186-6 in the allotted 20 overs. Skipper Syed Mubashir Hussain batted sensibly to make 62 runs off 41 balls. At No. 6 ,Shehzad accelerated the score with an explosive 77 off just 33 balls. He hit three consecutive sixes in the second over of Rayeesuddin and produced 22 runs in that over. Abu Hassan took two wickets.
In reply, the Jet Airways opening pair of Anwar Ahmed Khan (15) and Syed Mohammad Afroz (9) were sent back to the pavilion by Rashid. But Raziuddin Abdul Aziz, the scoring machine of Jet Airways, shouldered the responsibilities once again. Along with left-handed Shahid Iqbal he built up the innings. Shahid made a quickfire 28. The patient Raziuddin stayed cool at one end and the lower order pinch-hitter Sadiq blasted 38 in 23 balls. Raziuddin and Sadiq remain unbeaten on 47 and 38 runs respectively. Jet Airways flew home by losing only 5 wickets with 9 balls to spare.
