Boost your mood
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 26 - 04 - 2008

If you are feeling down, certain foods can actually help lift your spirits. Foods that increase the production of brain chemicals such as serotonin can help make you feel better.
In addition to regular exercise, relaxation techniques to relieve stress such as deep breathing exercises, a warm bath, taking a walk, and sharing your concerns with a good friend, these foods can give you that boost of energy you are looking for.
u Popcorn: Use microwave low fat pop-corn free of trans-fats and leave out the butter. Popcorn is a healthy snack, quick to fix, low in fat, and high in carbohydrates that can improve energy levels and your mood.
u Hot cocoa: It turns out that the relaxation effect of hot cocoa is not a myth! Compounds found in the cocoa bean can lift the mood and lower blood pressure. Moms already use hot cocoa as a remedy on a rainy day. You can even drink a cup before bed to help you sleep.
u Eggs: Despite all the bad press, eggs are a healthy part of your diet. They are rich in protein and calcium and are perfect nourishment for the brain. Eating one egg can make you feel full quickly and decrease your appetite for sweets. It is recommended to have one boiled egg every other day, unless you have high cholesterol or have other cardiovascular risks.
u Ginger: This herb can increase your energy levels, improve blood circulation, aid digestion, and treat anxiety and depression. Drink it as a hot tea with a little honey.
u Chocolate: Women can swear by chocolate's power to relieve the blues. Chocolate does contain anti-oxidants and other compounds that can keep your spirits high. To get the benefits without overindulging in this treat, choose the dark chocolate and take only a small amount each day (avoid eating a whole chocolate bar on one day).
u Turkey: The amino acid found in turkey, tryptophan leads the brain to produce the mood elevating brain chemical serotonin. This brain chemical helps to relax and can induce sleep. It can also help you deal with stress without feeling too frustrated. Roasted turkey is a great idea for lunch, or you can eat a turkey sandwich in the evening for dinner.
u Grape juice: A glass of grape juice is full of polyphenols that are healthy for your heart, reduce the risk of stroke, boost your mood, and supply your brain with energy. Be sure to drink 100% grape juice without added sugar. __
