Seven projects worth SR57 million for the maintenance and beautification of roads in Makkah are underway, said Osama Fadhl Al-Bar, Mayor of Makkah and member of the Central Haj Committee. Speaking to Saudi Gazette, the mayor said that one project will spend SR19,793,000 for the maintenance of major roads in the city while another project worth SR10,998,168 is for the maintenance of roads in residential areas. Other projects are for the beautification of roads in Makkah, providing pre-cast cement concrete slabs for securing the sides of the roads, and building overhead tanks to store water to irrigate plants in the medial strip between the two traffic lanes. Al-Bar said another project is for building toilets and places for making ablution. The roads, he said, are more than 160 km in length and cover an area of 25 million sq. meters. This project also includes landscaping on the four ring roads and the illumination of these highways with poles having two lights on each side.
