Besiktas holds Lyon to 1-1 draw in Cup
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 26 - 07 - 2009

Turkish champion Besiktas held French side Lyon to a 1-1 draw Saturday in the Peace Cup.
In the other match of the night Spain's Malaga stunned England's Aston Villa 1-0.
Sweden's Kim Kallstrom opened the scoring for Lyon with a well-struck shot from outside the penalty area into the corner of the net. But Brazil's Marcio Nobre equalized for the Turkish side with just six minutes remaining with a header.
Twelve teams from around the globe, including Juventus, Sevilla, Aston Villa and Saudi club Al-Ittihad are taking part in the fourth edition of the pre-season tournament which got underway on Friday.
There are four groups with three teams in each. The top team in each group goes through to the semifinals which will be played on July 31. The final takes place two days later in Seville.
Chelsea beats Milan 2-1
New signing Yuri Zhirkov scored the winning goal as Chelsea beat AC Milan 2-1 in a preseason friendly in Baltimore on Friday.
It was a satisfying victory for new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti against the team he managed for nine seasons before decamping to the Premier League.
“It was a difficult game because Milan played so well,” said Ancelotti, who quit as manager of the Italian club in May and signed a three-year contract with Chelsea. “I'm happy for the victory, but we have to improve.”
Ancelotti won two Champions League titles and one Serie A championship with Milan. During that time he coached his successor as Milan manger, the Brazilian Leonardo.
With the score 1-1, Milan goalkeeper Zeljko Kalanc stopped two close-range shots before Zhirkov's low drive from 19 yards found a corner of the net. The Russian left winger is a new arrival at Stamford Bridge, signing from CSKA Moscow.
Milan had two excellent chances to equalize in stoppage time, but Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech tipped away one attempt before another shot went wide.
Didier Drogba gave Chelsea a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, sending a rising shot past Kalac.
Milan missed a chance to draw even in the 19th minute, when Andrea Pirlo fired a shot that was deflected by Cech to Ronaldinho, who was denied on a bicycle kick.
But the Italian team drew even in the 38th minute through Clarence Seedorf. The veteran Dutch midfielder left the game in the second half with a leg injury.
The game was part of the World Football Challenge. Chelsea has also beaten Inter Milan but lost to Mexico's America.
Gerrard scores on return
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard celebrated his high-profile courtroom acquittal by scoring in his team's 2-2 draw against neighbor Tranmere in a pre-season friendly in London on Friday.
The England star played for Liverpool reserves at Prenton Park in Birkenhead just hours after being found not guilty on a charge of affray.
Gerrard, who was forced to miss his team's pre-season tour of Asia as he fought to clear his name, was part of a youthful Liverpool side which fell a goal behind just before half-time.
But before being substituted after 63 minutes, he blasted a fine equalizer with a low drive from outside the box.
