The Shariah Medical Committee in Jeddah has fined a French orthopedic consultant for allowing his assistant to operate on a patient while he provided instructions over the telephone. The French doctor was fined SR10,000 for permitting a procedure to be carried out on the thigh of a patient which later led to complications. The committee absolved him of responsibility for the medical error but ruled that allowing his assistant to perform the operation was a breach of regulations, and ordered him to pay SR10,000 in compensation to the patient.
