A judge has sentenced a young man and woman to one day's incarceration after they were caught riding together in the same car. The Saudi man and his Ethiopian companion were given the sentence, and also obliged to sign an undertaking not to repeat their actions, after having expressed their regret and remorse before the court. The presiding judge, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Shathri, is well-known for what have been termed his “alternative sentences.”
