Garbage-bin baby, savaged by cats, undergoes surgery

A Saudi cosmetic surgeon on Monday successfully operated on a nine-month-old baby girl who had been abandoned in a street garbage bin where she was badly mauled and bitten by cats.
Dr. Mamdoh Eshi, a cosmetic surgery consultant at Eid Clinic, accepted the case of the baby girl after both government and private hospitals had refused to take it on because it was extremely complicated.
The baby girl was found abandoned in the garbage five months ago when she was only four months old, and Dr. Eshi decided to take care of the girl until she became old enough for surgery to be performed.
“When we received the case, the baby was only four months old, and it was not possible to perform surgery at that time. The infant had been in the garbage for a long time and cats had bitten her on the face, nose, forehead and right eyebrow,” Dr. Eshi said.
“The baby's condition was very serious. Because of damage to the nose, the girl was breathing through her mouth which led to the possibility of suffocation while she was sleeping,” he added.
According to Dr. Eshi, the baby arrived at the hospital suffering from torn mucous membranes and fractures to the nasal septum.
“After a medical checkup we decided to perform surgery in order to replace the damaged windpipe with a new one,” he added.
“The surgery was complicated by the fact that she is very young and her nose is small.”
Although the surgery on the child's nose was a success, the baby still needs to undergo a series of surgical operations to reconstruct her face.
“This initial surgery was only the first step. We still need to rebuild the girl's nose and face through several operations,” Dr. Eshi said.
