A training tour of the Municipality of Jeddah's health inspectors and students of a private health institute ended in the closure of a bakery on Saturday. By mere chance, the inspectors and their trainees discovered that the bakery's workers had been preparing the pastries in the bakery's toilets. The pastries were bound to go for sale to customers in the evening of the same day. The inspectors found 70 boxes of expired food and 2,000 food cans that had expired two years ago. Health inspectors Mohammad Al-Ghamdi, director of markets at the Aziziyah District Municipality, Sa'ad Al-Boqmi and Saleh Al-Zahrani, were on a trial inspection tour that was part of field training for the students. The group strolled into a bakery on the second floor of a supermarket, where they saw a worker cleaning dishes. As soon as he spotted them, the worker became confused, giving away the whole operation. The Inspectors were surprised to find thyme, cheese and sugar – ingredients of pastries – all covered with ants inside a toilet. Inspectors said that the ant-infested stock was being prepared to be used in making the pastries. The team also searched the bakery's warehouse and found 10 large trays that are believed to have been prepared using rotten ingredients. The bakery was sealed and its owner summoned for investigation. __
