Mariam Nihal Saudi Gazette Atif Aslam and Sonu Nigam collaborated on a progressive music project in Dubai last week, with the sole purpose of connecting people through a medium of peace. The duo teamed up to perform their greatest hits individually and finally together in a ‘Jugalbandi' at the end of the show. Both artists graciously sang each other's songs but were quick to make the night a memorable one with their rendition of classics. Atif, the transcendent genius had already won the crowd with his soulful performance of Tajdare Haram- the qawwali, which was the most sought after performance that night. In between his set he took a moment to address the crowd and those not present, to acknowledge the absence of legends who inspired him including Nusret Fateh Ali Khan and Reshma, among others. He paid tribute to great artists and the music they had left behind and then took a bold initiative to leave legacy behind by adding value to his own discography with a more meaningful contribution with Tajdare Haram. Sonu delivered crowd chanting Bollywood hits before he came on stage to perform with his counterpart. In an earlier statement, Atif said music had nothing to do with politics. “There should never be any lines or demarcations in the creative field. Arts and music transcends such petty politics. Which is why, both Sonu and myself, were united in our decision to perform together, as one unit. Audiences in Dubai will not be seeing two solo concerts on one stage tonight; they will see us performing largely together as a tribute to India and Pakistan.” Sonu further added: “We will show the people how two artists, from India and Pakistan, can share a stage in the name of unity. This concert will set an example of how the community needs to behave.” And it did. Both artists remained dignified and could not help praising each other while delivering sensational music and their commitment to it. The audience was a majority of South Asian expats living in Dubai and local Emiratis who came to share their love for music. The show opened to big crowd, young and old, serving justice to both with Din Dhal Jaaye, Tum Itna Jo Muskara Rahe Ho, Lambi Judaai and many more Bollywood classics that will live beyond time.
