HOUSTON — Mike Fiers tossed the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season in just his third start for Houston, leading the Astros to a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in an Inter-League game Friday. Fiers, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers at the July 30 trade deadline, struck out 10, walked three and retired the final 21 Dodger batters. “Everything was working tonight,” said Fiers after his first career complete game. “I was just trying to go as long as possible and not give up as many runs.” It was the second Major League Baseball no-hitter in the past nine days, after Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma on August 12. Fiers joins Iwakuma, San Francisco's Chris Heston, Washington's Max Scherzer and Philadelphia's Cole Hamels as pitchers who have no-hitters this season. The 30-year-old Fiers struck out batter Justin Turner on his 134th pitch to finish off the no-hitter in front of a crowd of 33,800 at Minute Maid Park. He celebrated by tossing his glove into the air before being mobbed by his teammates at the side of the mound. American League Red Sox 7, Royals 2: Rookie Henry Owens pitched eight solid innings, Josh Rutledge hit a two-run homer, and Boston handed Johnny Cueto his worst start since he was picked up by Kansas City. Owens (2-1), making just his fourth major league start, gave up two runs (one earned) and four hits, walking one and striking out four. Twins 4, Orioles 3: Kurt Suzuki delivered a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning to lead Minnesota past Baltimore. After a four-game winning streak, the Orioles have lost three of four and remain just outside of the playoff picture. Rangers 2, Tigers 0: Veteran Colby Lewis shut out Detroit on six hits over seven innings, and Texas' bullpen made two early runs stand up. Lewis (14-5) equaled his single-season high for wins, previously set in 2011. He was helped by three double plays and a challenge that took a Detroit run off the scoreboard, but he walked just one batter while striking out two. Indians 7, Yankees 3: Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 in 6 2/3 outstanding innings, leading Cleveland to a victory over New York. Cleveland's Michael Brantley had a pair of RBI singles, and Carlos Santana homered and added a run-scoring groundout. White Sox 11, Mariners 4: Chris Sale fanned 14 Seattle batters, leading Chicago to a blowut win. Sale recorded his 12th double-digit strikeout game of the season, and the 30th of his career. His 29 strikeouts in back-to-back starts are a career high. Other results: Rays 2, Athletics 1; Blue Jays 9, Angels 2. National League Mets 14, Rockies 9: Yoenis Cespedes hit three home runs, and New York blew an early six-run lead before rebounding to beat Colorado. Cespedes went 5-for-6, adding a double, seven RBIs and five runs as the Mets defeated the Rockies for the ninth consecutive time. Diamondbacks 6, Reds 3: A.J. Pollock and Yasmany Tomas hit solo homers, and Rubby De La Rosa allowed two runs over seven innings, lifting Arizona to a victory over Cincinnati. Pollock went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and two stolen bases. Giants 6, Pirates 4: Marlon Byrd had three hits, including a home run, in his debut for San Francisco, and Madison Bumgarner won his 15th game and hit his fifth homer of the season. Bumgarner (15-6) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and one walk. He tied the Chicago Cubs' Jake Arrieta for the National League lead in wins. Brewers 10, Nationals 3: Jonathan Lucroy had three hits and scored twice, and Milwaukee broke open the game with five runs in the seventh inning to beat Washington. Adam Lind had two hits and two runs, and Elian Herrera added two hits for the Brewers. Phillies 7, Marlins 1: Jerad Eickhoff prevailed in his major league debut, tossing six scoreless innings and hitting a two-run single to lead Philadelphia past Miami. Ryan Howard had three doubles and two RBIs for the Phillies. Other results: Cubs 5, Braves 3; Padres 9, Cardinals 3. — Agencies
