Ahmad Al-Lihyani Okaz/Saudi Gazette MAKKAH — Residents of a north Makkah district claim they have been living in fear for years due to the numerous electricity boxes and stations left exposed around the area. They blamed the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) for neglecting the Abu Muragh District. Resident Hadai Al-Amry said: “We called and complained multiple times but no one has done anything. “You can see the sewage water leaking in the streets, making these electricity boxes dangerous for our children and the elderly.” Abdulrahman Al-Ghamdi said Abu Muragh District is one of the most crowded areas in Makkah. He said: “Parents are in constant fear as they wait for their children to come home from school. “The electricity station there does not follow safety procedures and is completely reckless in leaving its doors open and its generators exposed.” He added the company inspectors have come to the district and inspected the situation but nothing has been done to resolve the issue. “We also often experience power cuts. That is because stray cats are being electrocuted after trying to climb the station's fences.” Hamdan Al-Harby said next to his house there is a rundown electricity station posing a grave danger to his children. He said: “The electrical cables and wires are exposed and the fence is very low. “The station has been ignored by the company for months. If it is not functioning it should be completely demolished.” A source from the SEC said the company is aware of the situation and is working on closing all open electricity boxes, covering all exposed cables and cleaning up the potentially harmful ruins of electricity stations. “We care about citizens' safety and we will take the necessary actions in due time,” said the source.
