PARIS — Barcelona added a Copa del Rey title to its La Liga crown on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain strolled to an incredible French quadruple, Arsenal retained the FA Cup in England and Wolfsburg surprised Borussia Dortmund in Germany on a weekend of Cup finals across Europe. At the Camp Nou, a Lionel Messi-inspired Barcelona sealed a Spanish double for the Catalan side for the first time since 2009 as it swept aside Athletic Bilbao 3-1 to win the Copa de Rey for the 27th time.
The Argentine genius found the back of the net on both sides of a 36th-minute Neymar goal, who found himself at the end of a selfless pass from Luis Suarez.
There's only one game left — the Champions League final against Juventus on June 6 — for Barcelona to repeat its historic 2009 season when it claimed an incredible quadruple — La Liga-Copa de Rey-Champions League-Club World Cup.
“From the start we saw a great Barca with all the players at a high level,” said Barcelona boss Luis Enrique.
“It is a pity for Athletic to have played these finals in the last few years against a Barca playing so well.”
In the Stade de France, a lone strike from Edinson Cavani clinched the first domestic quadruple in French footballing history.
PSG, which already successfully defended its Ligue 1 title, and won the League Cup as well as the Champions' Trophy, struggled against second-tier Auxerre but the Uruguyan delivered on a silver platter that French Cup, the only domestic title missing from Paris' cabinet since it was taken over by its big-spending Qatari owners in 2011.
Relegated in 2012, Auxerre, which saw Eric Cantona, Abou Diaby and Bacary Sagna rise through its ranks, won a league and cup double under legendary coach Guy Roux in 1996 while also lifting the Cup in 1994, 2003 and 2005. PSG's victory means that Bordeaux, which was sixth in the league, now qualifies for the Europa League, while Ligue 1 runner-up Lyon will play in the next Champions' Trophy.
In Berlin, Dortmund's plans to send Jurgen Klopp off in style after seven years in charge were spoiled by Wolfsburg, which beat the 2013 Champions League finalist 3-1, thanks to goals from Luiz Gustavo, Kevin de Bruyne and Bas Dost.
The defeat means Dortmund must now goes through the qualifying rounds for the Europa League having missed the chance to claim a direct entry had it won the final.
Juventus draws 2-2 at Verona
A last-gasp equalizer saw champion Juventus held to a 2-2 draw at Hellas Verona in its last Serie A match of the season while Luca Toni netted again to leave him on the verge of clinching the Italian league's top goalscorer award — at the age of 38.
Toni's equalizer earlier in the second half left him on 22 goals in the fight for the “capocannoniere” prize, two more than Juventus striker Carlos Tevez and Mauro Icardi.
Roberto Pereyra and Fernando Llorente scored for Juventus. There was late drama as Tevez had a penalty saved before Juventus midfielder Simone Pepe was sent off in stoppage time and Juanito Gomez leveled moments later.
It was the second penalty Tevez had failed to score from this season. Had he netted both, he would now be level with Toni.
Elsewhere, Giacomo Bonaventura scored twice against his former club as AC Milan won 3-1 at Atalanta in what was probably Filippo Inzaghi's final match in charge. — Agencies
