This would be a respected move on the part of the government of Qatar and it will add to the reputation of Islamic countries which has been hurt due to this system. Dr. Syed Abid Ali The word “kafeel” means “the one who takes care”. But the reality is totally the opposite. Poor expatriate workers end up taking care of the kafeel by paying large amounts for iqamas (residence permits) and work transfers. Despite this, the kafeel misuses his authority and threatens and blackmails workers, except those who are lucky enough to work in companies, which like real kafeels, pay for the renewal of visas, and the travel and accommodation of their employees. Ahmad Ijaz The sponsorship system and kafeel abuse in Saudi Arabia has gone on long enough. It is time to abolish this system. We are the victims. Over any small issue, kafeels threaten workers with a final exit or a ban on returning to the Kingdom. Children are here on their father's visa, so if the father is given a final exit, the children have to go as well even though the mother is living and working here. Meshal Ahmed This is a great move. Countries like Qatar, Bahrain and Oman have better sponsorship laws. Some even offer self-sponsorship. Long-term expats in Saudi Arabia who want to live here deserve permanent residency. Tariq Khan
