Rodriguez helps Yankees hammer Red Sox

NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez drove in four runs, and the New York Yankees scored seven times in the top of the first inning en route to a 14-4 rout of the Boston Red Sox in the American League Sunday.
New York (2-4) third baseman Chase Headley (3-for-5) and second baseman Stephen Drew homered in the first inning, and catcher Brian McCann added a solo home run in the eighth. The Red Sox fell to 4-2.
Tigers 8, Indians 5: Miguel Cabrera had his second consecutive four-hit game, as he hit two home runs and four RBIs, to lead the Detroit Tigers to a win over the Cleveland Indians.
The red-hot Tigers (6-0) swept the three-game series in Cleveland, outscoring the Indians 25-15.
Royals 9, Angels 2: Yordano Ventura retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced as shortstop Alcides Escobar drove in three runs to lead the Kansas City Royals to a rout of the Los Angeles Angels.
Ventura conceded a home run to first baseman Albert Pujols but the 23-year-old Dominican finished with seven strikeouts 5-2/3 innings to help the Royals improve to 6-0.
Mariners 8, Athletics 7: Nelson Cruz hit a tie-breaking solo home run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning, and the Seattle Mariners held on for a victory against the Oakland Athletics.
In other games it was: Blue Jays 10, Orioles 7; White Sox 6, Twins 2; Astros 6, Rangers 4 (14 innings).
National League
Mets 4, Braves 3: Bartolo Colon had an unlikely RBI single while pitching seven strong innings and pinch-hitter Daniel Murphy had a tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the eighth as the New York Mets handed the Atlanta Braves their first loss.
Jonny Gomes tied the game in the seventh against Colon with his first homer for the Braves before the Mets went ahead in the eighth.
Padres 6, Giants 4: Reserve San Diego Padres catcher Wil Nieves hit a grand slam to lead the Padres to a win over the San Francisco Giants.
Will Venable added a home run in the seventh inning to put the game away for the Padres.
Cardinals 7, Reds 5 (11 innings): Matt Carpenter's two-run home run off Kevin Gregg in the 11th inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 4: Rookies Alex Guerrero and Joc Pederson hit their first Major League home runs while Zack Greinke pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Cubs 6, Rockies 5: Dexter Fowler hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, leading the Chicago Cubs to a win over the Colorado Rockies.
Nationals 4, Phillies 3 (10 innings): The Washington Nationals avoided a sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies with a late rally.
Pirates 10, Brewers 2: Former MVP Andrew McCutchen rocketed a three-run home run to jump-start his Pittsburgh Pirates to a victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Inter-League
Rays 8, Marlins 5: David DeJesus had several highlights, including a three-run homer, to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a win over the Miami Marlins.
Making just his second start of the year for the Rays, DeJesus went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one diving catch. He is hitting .545 with six RBI in his 11 at-bats this season. — Reuters
