MAKKAH - Police in Makkah denied reports circulating on social media websites that tainted Zamzam water is being sold in the city.
Makkah Police spokesman Lt. Gen. Ati Al-Qurashi said there have been no reports of police seizing tainted Zamzam water.
“The reports are not true. The Zamzam water police previously seized was either counterfeit Zamzam water or Zamzam water being sold by street sellers which is a violation. There is a royal decree banning the sale of Zamzam water. It is available at the Grand Mosque for free and it is illegal to fill the water in bottles for resale purposes,” said Lt. Gen. Al-Qurashi.
He added that the Makkah Police were carrying out inspection campaigns to arrest expatriates and street sellers who are selling Zamzam water in the city or on highways.
“People should refer to official sources of information and not believe in social media rumors. If the community collaborates on preventing false information from being spread, we will have to deal with less corruption and fear in our society,” said Lt. Gen. Al-Qurashi.
