NEW YORK — US President Barack Obama hosted a private screening of the historical drama film "Selma" at the White House Friday. A number of guests at the screening included Oprah Winfrey, hip-hop artist Common, Selma director Ava DuVernay, David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo and Tim Roth.
Winfrey, who was also the producer of the film, was portrayed as the civil rights activist Annie Lee Cooper in the film.
Major wins were predicted for "Selma" including the best director for DuVernay, and best actor Oyelowo, who gained accolades for his stunning portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr.
But, the film was only nominated by the Academy in two categories: best picture and best original song.
The Academy was snubbed for "being all male" and "too white." — SG
