A VIDEO of a man driving female teachers to work at a high speed was recently posted online. The video shows the man traveling at 200 km per hour on a highway in Sakaka while another driver, the man who captured the video, was trying to catch up with him. We should not be surprised when we read about the tragic accidents female teachers have on the road that result in the deaths of many of them. This reckless driver does not see anything wrong with driving a minibus full of female teachers at such a crazy speed on roads that do not have safety signs, let alone maintenance. These roads cut through deserts and sometimes are packed with vehicles coming from the opposite direction. Unfortunately, authorities have not done anything about the countless female teachers who died on the road while they were being transported by drivers like this man. School transportation for female teachers and students is at its worse stage ever. A driver of buses carrying female teachers should meet certain conditions before being allowed to sit behind the steering wheel. Also, a driver of a truck should meet the same conditions. However, it seems that an expatriate driver who has not driven a heavy vehicle before back in his country will be allowed here to drive a truck. This is a completely chaotic scenario, if anything. Today, any man who owns a dilapidated car can transport female teachers, or I should say kill them, by traveling at high speed on dangerous roads. This chaos cannot be found in countries poorer than us. How come it is happening here when we are a rich country and have all basic resources and infrastructure to provide safety on roads for female teachers working at remote schools? All people who die in road accidents deserve our sympathy, including women. But for women who die in this fashion, we should take some blame because we have not allowed them to drive cars nor have we provided them with proper transportation services. This bloodshed will, unfortunately, continue until authorities do something about it.
