The new school year began with a familiar story in Tabuk, as pupils at Nabi' Dama Primary School returned on their second day to mourn the passing of two teachers killed on Sunday in a motor accident on their way to work. The collision between the car, which was transporting five teachers a mere five kilometers to school along the Dhebaa' to Al-Wajh road, was reportedly caused by careless driving, leading the vehicle to striking the rear of a transport truck. A Civil Defense spokesman said that the accident, which led to injuries to the other three teachers, occurred shortly after 6 AM. The circumstances surrounding the collision, he said, are still being investigated. Transport for women teachers has been a source of contention for some time in the Kingdom because of the number of accidents in which they are involved due to the time of travel, frequent instances of careless driving, and unsuitable road surfaces, particularly in remote regions of the country. A Tabuk Traffic Department official said that over 50 female teachers were killed or injured in bus accidents to and from schools in the region last year, with most of the incidents caused by excessive speed and other forms of dangerous driving. – Okaz/SG – Muhammad Al-Sa'id and Nadir Al-Enizi also contributed to the report. __
