Marzouq Al-Otaibi Makkah Daily As far as the rights of citizens are concerned, we are still a backward community. As for women, they are not getting their due rights in certain respects in the legal and moral point of view. Take for example the case of driving. Women are not allowed to drive apparently because she has not been considered as an individual who can shoulder her own responsibilities. Woman in our society is far away from having a feeling of security under the law. Several women have been subjected to inhuman practices and harassment and they see no laws coming to protect them. We can see several instances for this like the practice of preventing women from getting married, harassment at the house of husband and deprivation of inheritance. There are cases in which some men stay away from their estranged wives and deliberately delay their divorce for several years without giving their alimony and other due rights. In such cases, the law is not coming to protect her. In the case of women being blackmailed by husbands by denying them custody of children, they see no refuge in the law. A section of society considers women as weak people who need protection and their duty is only raising children. Women should be considered full-fledged members of society enjoying all rights. This is the best way to treat women as equal to men in their rights in the eyes of law and the ethics of society. The rights of women under the law shall be guaranteed in all circumstances.
