The Ministry of Interior has recently required passport officers at the Kingdom's international airports to wear a thobe (white robe), shemagh (headgear) and iqal (black rope-like cord) instead of the official passport department uniform. I hope this new change in the dress code will also result in a change in the way the Kingdom's immigration officers welcome and say goodbye to non-Saudi passengers arriving in or leaving our country. These officers should always smile and treat foreign passengers in a kind and friendly manner. Doing so will reflect the true image of the Kingdom. When people travel to other countries, the first thing they expect from the immigration officer is a big welcoming smile. They also expect the immigration officer to treat them nicely. The way you welcome someone can leave a lasting impression. It gives travelers an idea about the culture of the country they are visiting. I believe the decision requiring passport officers at our airports to wear traditional Saudi dress is a step in the right direction. Looking around us, many neighboring countries require their airport immigration officers to do the same. The Directorate of Passports must select officers who will represent the Kingdom well. These officers should have a good command of English and have a practical knowledge of phrases in some other languages which they can use to communicate with travelers from different countries.
