KOLKATA — The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership on Monday made it clear that the party intends to close the Anna Hazare chapter and go it alone for the ensuing elections. The decision was made public a day before Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was scheduled to embark on the campaign trail. So, instead of the earlier planned Mamata-Anna Hazare joint rally in Ahmedabad on March 20, the chief minister will be in Murshidabad's Lalbagh on that day to address a party workers' meet. “Mamata Banerjee is a popular leader. She does not require any person to boost her image,” TMC all-India general secretary Mukul Roy said. Asked whether Mamata's Ahmedabad rally has been rescheduled, Roy said, “It is not decided yet.” Senior TMC MP Saugata Roy, however, said, “As of now, Mamata Banerjee has already called off the scheduled rally in Ahmedabad. To my knowledge, there is no further joint program to be held with Anna. Hence, we are going ahead with fighting from as many constituencies as possible on our own.”
