Syeda Amtul Saudi Gazette JEDDAH — Several distinguished faculty members and doctors from various hospitals, medical cities and universities in the Kingdom participated in a recent workshop entitled "The Truth about Specialties. The workshop was organized by Batterjee Medical College for Science and Technology at its campus in North Obhur. The workshop, which was attended by more than 450 students from private and public universities, included scientific sessions and lectures delivered by guest speakers. Each speaker talked about a certain specialty: Dr. Nizar Bahabry (infectious diseases), Dr. Waleed Hafez (rheumatic diseases ), Dr. Hani Al-Moalem (internal medicine, rheumatology, medical education and research), Dr. Hassan Shaibah (medical education), Dr. Bandar Hafez (obstetrics and gynecology ), Dr. Talal Al-Andijani (ENT), Dr. Khalid Khashugshi (X-ray), Dr. Hassan Huwait (pathology), Dr. Ayman Al-Sulimani (thoracic surgery), Dr. Maan Kattan (anesthesiology) and Dr. Emad Al-Azhari (family medicine). The speakers focused on the principles of how to choose a medical specialty based on their personal experience in the field. Dr. Shaibah, BMC dean, said there were around 20 major specialties. They have been divided into three main groups: general, special and helping specialties. He added: "Students must first choose the type of specialization they want before choosing the discipline that falls under its category". He noted that students must recognize their interests during the initial stage and they must know the available options in order to make wise decisions that will affect their career
Dr. Khaled Batterjee, vice chairman of the college's Board of Trustees, said his institute was keen on such courses and workshops that would help in accomplishing academic excellence.
