DUBAI – Following the dramatic rescue of a Syrian baby girl last week, footage has emerged of the fourteen-month-old Ghina Khalil – who had been trapped under layers upon layers of rubble and debris – playing and with no signs of visible injuries. Ghina had been buried under the dusty rubble of her home after an alleged airstrike on Jan. 22 in the northern city of Aleppo, which reportedly claimed the life of her mother, according to Nour Media Center, that had initially uploaded the video of her rescue to the internet. The Syrian government has been accused of using airstrikes and rocket attacks indiscriminately against residential areas. The video showed a group of men frantically scooping away handfuls of crumbled concrete with their bare hands amid cries of “God is greatest.” Ghina's curly-haired head was emerging from the dust. With her arms freed, the girl reaches up to wipe her eyes in a sign of life. The Associated Press reported that according to the activist who filmed the video, the girl was completely buried for at least three minutes and her mother was killed in the attack. A video following her rescue shows Ghina in new clothes, with no visible injuries. International media outlets dubbed Ghina a “miracle baby.” – Agencies
