The keynote speaker at the occasion was Engr. Hadeed Ahmed Sher and the title of his presentation was “Harnessing Solar Power – Current Perspectives and Future Challenges.” Sher told the audience that since the rise of industrial age in Western World the demand of electrical energy is growing day by day, imposing threats of depletion of conventional energy resources from the region alongside increasing environmental pollution. His research was mainly based on Maximum Power Point (MPP) of a PV module at which it can deliver maximum electrical energy with the invent of a new type of micro inverter. He emphasized that for countries and regions where conventional natural resources of energy such as oil and gas are rare or about to deplete; the solar energy system is a one-time investment which conserves foreign exchange in the long run. “It will create new employment opportunities, facilitate development of micro lending programs and reduce air pollution by offsetting greenhouse gases. Least time is required to setup a solar power plant as compared to any other type of power plant. By grace of Allah, this resource is abundant without any fear of depletion. On the other hand, it has some disadvantages as well which shall always be considered such as nature dependency, less efficiency and high capital cost. Its power quality and reliability also needs to be monitored and controlled on regular basis,” he said. The chief guest at the seminar was the deputy Ambassador of Pakistan Engr. Khayyam Akbar. He appreciated the extensive research carried out by the young presenter and hoped that the cooperation in research will continue between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The chairman of IEP-SAC, Engr Jaleel Hassan, urged Pakistani engineers to proactively transfer the knowledge in their respective fields to their fellow young Saudi engineers. — SG
