Winston, Manziel look to make Heisman moves
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 11 - 11 - 2013

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston could afford to have a quiet day as his defense did much of the work to set up a 59-3 blowout win over Wake Forest in college football Saturday.
Winston threw for a mediocre 159 yards and two touchdown passes while the Seminoles' defense tied a school record with six interceptions.
Winston's main rival for the Heisman Trophy — as college football's player of the season — is Johnny Manziel, and the Texas A&M quarterback was both more spectacular and more mistake-prone.
The Aggies needed every bit of Manziel's 446 yards passing and personal best-tying five touchdowns in a 51-41 victory at home against Mississippi State.
Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota seemed to be the front-runner for the Heisman, but he had an off night as the Ducks lost to Stanford Thursday. Manziel is trying for his second consecutive Heisman.
Alabama's A.J. McCarron helped his Heisman case by throwing three touchdown passes in a 38-17 victory against Louisiana State.
T.J. Yeldon ran for 133 yards and two scores as the top-ranked Crimson Tide turned to power football to take control of a game that was tied early in the third quarter.
Alabama scored the final 21 points to brush aside its first challenge since Game 2 against Texas A&M.
McCarron was a workmanlike 14-of-20 passing for 179 yards, letting Yeldon, Kenyan Drake and their blockers assert control.
Tigers quarterback Zach Mettenberger completed 16 of 23 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown but was also sacked four times.
It was the most points Alabama has scored against LSU since a 41-12 victory in 1947.
Florida State clinched an ACC championship game berth with the big win over Wake Forest.
Nate Andrews took an interception 56 yards for a touchdown and Jalen Ramsey returned a fumble 23 yards for a score on consecutive plays.
The Seminoles claimed the inside track to a BCS title game berth with Oregon's loss on Thursday. They kept firm grasp of it by forcing seven turnovers and breaking the stadium record of 56 points they set in 1994.
Manziel put in a performance to remember in what could well be his last home game. He is eligible for the next NFL draft.
He set a school career record for total yards with 9,040 and a single-season record with 31 touchdown passes. He became just the second A&M quarterback to run for 2,000 yards in a career and has 3,313 yards passing this year to become the first Aggie with two 3,000-yard passing seasons.
Auburn's Nick Marshall gained 214 of Auburn's 444 yards rushing and the Tigers scored on a punt return and kickoff return while beating Tennessee 55-23.
Missouri's Maty Mauk threw five touchdown passes, four to Dorial Green-Beckham, as the Tigers cruised past Kentucky 48-17. — AP
