Dodgers rout Phillies for 10th straight win
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 08 - 2013

PHILADELPHIA — Clayton Kershaw pitched eight dominant innings and the seemingly unstoppable Los Angeles Dodgers won their 10th straight Saturday night, beating Philadelphia 5-0 to keep the Phillies scoreless in two games under new manager Ryne Sandberg.
Juan Uribe hit a three-run homer, Kershaw had an RBI double and the NL West-leading Dodgers improved to 25-3 after the All-Star break.
They have won 19 of their last 20 road games and are 42-8 overall since June 22, the best 50-game stretch in the majors since the 1942 St. Louis Cardinals had the same record.
The previous team to win 19 of 20 road games was the 1916 New York Giants, according to STATS.
The 10-game winning streak is the longest for Los Angeles since an 11-game run in 2006.
Meanwhile, the skidding Phillies have yet to cross home plate since manager Charlie Manuel was fired Friday in the middle of a second-half swoon. They were blanked 4-0 by Zack Greinke and the Dodgers in Sandberg's debut and have now lost 21 of 25.
Kershaw (12-7) allowed three hits and lowered his NL-best ERA to 1.80. He struck out eight, walked one and earned his first win in nine career games against the Phillies.
Uribe singled and doubled before hitting a three-run shot in the eighth. Kyle Kendrick (10-10) gave up two runs in six innings.
Nationals 8, Braves 7, 15 innings: Adam LaRoche led off the 15th inning with a home run and Washington recovered to beat Atlanta after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth.
Nationals star Stephen Strasburg was ejected in the second inning. He hit Justin Upton with a pitch in the first and was tossed after throwing two straight pitches behind Andrelton Simmons.
LaRoche lifted a high fly into the right-field seats for his 18th homer off Kris Medlen (10-11), a starter who was pressed into service after Atlanta exhausted its bullpen. The game lasted 5 hours, 29 minutes.
Jason Heyward hit two homers, including a two-run shot with two outs in the ninth as Nationals closer Rafael Soriano blew a 7-5 lead. Brian McCann and Freddie Freeman also went deep for the Braves.
Ryan Zimmerman homered for Washington and Craig Stammen (6-5) worked three hitless innings, striking out five. Dan Haren, normally a starter as well, pitched the 15th for his first career save.
Atlanta hit Bryce Harper with two pitches Friday night, leaving the outfielder bruised and unable to start on Saturday.
Diamondbacks 15, Pirates 5: Martin Prado went 4 for 5 with a three-run homer, Paul Goldschmidt added a three-run shot and Arizona routed Pittsburgh.
Prado's 11th homer of the season capped a six-run third inning against All-Star lefty Jeff Locke (9-4) and put the Diamondbacks ahead 8-0. Prado has driven in 13 runs in his past 10 games.
Cardinals 4, Cubs 0: Yadier Molina hit a two-run homer, Joe Kelly threw six spotless innings and St. Louis beat Chicago.
Brewers 2, Reds 0: Yovani Gallardo gave up three hits in 6 1-3 innings and Logan Schafer had a two-run double to snap an 0-for-21 slump and lead Milwaukee over Cincinnati.
Padres 8, Mets 2: Will Venable had four hits and San Diego got home runs from Nick Hundley and Jedd Gyorko in a victory over New York.
Giants 6, Marlins 4: Matt Cain pitched seven innings and Gregor Blanco hit a two-run triple to lift San Francisco over Miami. — Agencies
