The second round of the Chevrolet Speed Star Championship will be held at Al-Khobar on Thursday and Friday. The first-leg of the event was held in Jeddah on July 2 to 3. After the Al-Khobar round it will move to Riyadh later this year. After the great success of the 2007 championship Chevrolet continues supporting motorsport events in the Kingdom. Abdullah Bakhashab, motorsport developer in the Kingdom and the organizer of the event, expressed happiness in organizing such events with Chevrolet motorsport team. “This event will help control the driving skills. Driving has come in for a lot of criticism in Saudi Arabia - and rightly so. Exciting as it may be, this is not the kind of driving we encourage on public roads. Hence our involvement in transforming it into an organized motor sport discipline. Saudi drivers who are skilled in driving can now find an outlet to utilize their talent on a race-track, and not on the highway,” said Bakhashab. Amer Al-Nahdi, the Race Clerk, explained the details of the new championship 2008 and the judging criteria. The championship will consist of three rounds. In each round participants will display their driving technique on a twisting track specifically designed for the championship. The races will be judged on time, and drivers will accumulate points from each round with the title awarded to the driver with the most points. The points will be gained as follows: 20 points for 1st position, 15 for the 2nd, 12 for the 3rd, 10 for the 4th, 8 for the 5th, 6 for the 6th, 4 for the 7th and 2 for the 8th. There will be prize-money for the winners - SR10,000 for the 1st, SR6000 for the 2nd and SR3000 for the 3rd. To enter the Speed Star Championship a rear wheel or all wheel drive car and the desire to compete are the only requirements. __
