TRIPOLI – A retired colonel has been shot in Derna, the latest in a string of assassinations targeting military personnel in the east of the country. Colonel Abdullateef Emdawi Al-Dali Almzeni was killed yesterday afternoon while he was driving from his home to the Al Jbela area of Derna, according to Libyan news agency LANA. Almzeni, who was in his late sixties, had apparently been retired for many years. Another senior military figure was killed in Derna a week ago. Commander of the Derna Search and Rescue division of the Libyan Air Force, Colonel Fathi El-Emami, was shot while opening his jewellery shop for evening trade. Just days later, the Commander of the Benghazi Search and Rescue team, Colonel Aqila Al-Dukali Ubaidi, was kidnapped in Benghazi on his way home from giving condolences to El-Emami's family.
