MAKKAH — Adolescent motorcyclists, aged between 14 and 20, have become a nuisance on Makkah streets, especially during weekends and summer vacation. They drive at excessive speeds, disturbing the residents with their noise, and dangerous maneuvers. Despite all the criticism, some of the youth consider it a hobby and a sport like any other. They say that the ignorance of concerned authorities of this sport, and the lack of dedicated areas has forced them to practice it on the streets. Several young men said their rights have been neglected for years. They are asking for dedicated areas for them to practice their hobby away from the dangers that they face in the streets. They also criticized the angry reaction of the public, which accuses them of recklessness and irresponsibility. Mohammad Abdulrahman, an avid fan of motorcycling, said that they abide by the law and social values and that motorcycling is no different than driving a car. Naser Al-Asmari said he and his friends practice their hobby in an organized and friendly manner. He said that their motorcycles are more expensive than some luxury cars. Al-Asmari pointed out that a large number of motorcyclists from different professions indulge in this hobby, and some are engineers, doctors, officers, etc., and perform during low traffic periods. He stressed that those who show off are adolescents who own cheap motorcycles and drive in excessive speeds without any regard to traffic laws.
