I am writing with regard to the article "Will society allow women to drive?" (May 20). The author says that in the Gulf states, "anyone who attempts to harass women, in general, faces severe punishment." Do you really believe that such action can be enforced here in Saudi Arabia? Of course women will be harassed when they first begin to drive. That harassment will not subdue unless severe punishment is enforced, and for everyone, regardless of who they may be. Only then, I believe, can women drive safely in this country. T. Tawfiq II. The issue isn't about women, but whether male drivers can be more respectful on the road. The quality of drivers in Saudi Arabia in general is rather low. Many are ignorant and selfish traffic users who often violate the rights of other drivers and road rules. Until most men are able to drive graciously, I doubt that many women would want to drive even if the law permits it as it endangers their lives. Correct the manners of the people first. The society need to be more gracious and respectful of the rights of others and more road laws should be implemented to ensure driver safety. Until then the Kingdom's roads will remain in chaos.
