Saudi Arabia commits over $18 billion for refugees within its borders, Al-Rabeeah says
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 14 - 12 - 2023

GENEVA — Saudi Arabia has allocated over $18 billion to support refugees residing within its borders, according to statements made by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and Supervisor General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief).
Dr. Al-Rabeeah made these significant remarks during his participation in the Global Refugee Forum 2023, held in Geneva, Switzerland. In his address, he acknowledged the challenging global circumstances marked by escalating humanitarian crises and stressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment to the humanitarian cause, both on political and humanitarian fronts.
Highlighting the Kingdom's collaborative efforts with the international community to mitigate conflicts and crises globally, Dr. Al-Rabeeah emphasized Saudi Arabia's dedication to alleviating the suffering of refugees and their host countries by providing essential requirements for a decent life.
Over the years, Saudi Arabia has extended its humanitarian aid to refugees worldwide, amounting to $1.15 billion, thus significantly alleviating the burden on host countries. Dr. Al-Rabeeah noted that, thanks to the leadership's directives and support, refugees make up 5.5% of the total Saudi population, with the Kingdom hosting approximately 1.07 million refugees. These refugees receive free healthcare and educational opportunities, with Saudi Arabia's total expenditure amounting to $18.57 billion.
In response to the current crises and the rising numbers of refugees and displaced persons, the Kingdom, through KSrelief and in collaboration with international, regional, and local organizations, is executing a range of humanitarian projects across various sectors. The allocated budget for these initiatives totals $170 million, including $40 million specifically for displaced persons in Gaza. Moreover, Saudi Arabia is contributing $10 million to the Global Islamic Fund for Refugees.
Dr. Al-Rabeeah also revealed that approximately 7% of upcoming humanitarian projects over the next two years will be dedicated to refugees and displaced persons.
In conclusion, Dr. Al-Rabeeah emphasized the importance of uniting efforts to address refugee challenges and reduce their suffering. He called for partnerships and innovative initiatives, along with support for host countries, to create a better environment that upholds human dignity and fosters humanitarian stability. This approach aims to counter inhumane acts that have contributed to the growing numbers and deteriorating conditions of refugees.
