Published in The Saudi Gazette on 27 - 10 - 2020

More than 43.32 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,156,285 have died, according to a Reuters tally published on Tuesday.
With 225,313 deaths and around 8.7 million confirmed cases, the United States tops the list of 20 countries with the highest recorded infections and deaths in the world, followed by India, Brazil and Russia.
Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
The United States reported Monday 63,195 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 380 death cases. According to statistics issued by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of confirmed cases in United States reached 8,617,022 and 224,601 deaths.
In New Delhi, India reported 488 fatalities linked to the coronavirus disease in the last 24 hours, when country's COVID tally crossed the 79-lakh mark with 36,470 fresh cases, the lowest daily new cases after 3 months, showed the Health Ministry data this morning.
This is the lowest number of COVID-related deaths the country has reported since July 10 (475). The total positive cases of the country are 6,25,857 and now comprise merely 7.88% of the total cases.
The total recovered cases have crossed 72 lakhs (72,01,070). This has widened the gap between active cases and recovered cases and stands at 65,75,213 today. 63,842 patients have recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours. The national Recovery Rate has further grown to 90.62%.
Data shows that India was recording an average of 900-1,000 COVID-related deaths in August. This number rose to an average of 1,100 in September when coronavirus cases peaked with a daily average of 90,000 fresh cases.
But, October has seen a steady decline in cases and deaths. For the past week, India has been recording less than 1,000 deaths, which have remained below the 1,100-mark since Oct. 2.
Brazil registered 15,726 new cases of coronavirus and 263 new COVID-19 deaths, the Health Ministry said in Rio de Janeiro on Monday. Brazil has registered more than 5.4 million cases of the virus since the pandemic began, while the official death toll has risen to 157,397 according to ministry data.
The US, Russia and France set new daily records for coronavirus infections as a second wave swelled across parts of the Northern Hemisphere, forcing some countries to impose new curbs. The United States has the highest number of deaths and infections.
Word that a vaccine being developed, produced immune responses in both elderly and young people offered some positive news as autumn turns to winter in northern countries and people socialize indoors.
The seven-day average of new daily cases in the United States has reached a record high of 69,494, according to a Reuters tally, while deaths, hovering around 800 per day, are on an upward trend.
In Mexico City, Mexico's Health Ministry reported on Monday 4,166 additional cases of the novel coronavirus and 247 more deaths in the country. This brings the official number of cases to 895,326 and the death toll to 89,171, according to Reuters. — Agencies
