Political solution only solution to Syrian crisis: Saudi Arabia
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 30 - 06 - 2020

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan on Tuesday participated in the fourth edition of the Brussels conference on "Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region".
The conference, which was organized virtually, was co-chaired by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission Josep Borrell and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordination Mark Lowcock, with the participation of 80 delegates from more than 60 countries and a dozen international organizations.
Addressing the participants at the conference, Prince Faisal said: "The crisis in Syria has caused serious repercussions on the Syrian people, and on the security and stability of the region and the world, and the suffering of the Syrian people continues to this day."
Explaining Saudi Arabia's stance over the turmoil is Syria, Prince Faisal said: "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's position on the crisis in Syria is clear, and the Kingdom believes that a political solution is the only solution to the Syrian crisis, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva Process (1)."
"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stresses the importance of fighting all terrorist organizations in all their forms."
Saudi foreign minister exposed Iran's dangerous role in the region in general and in Syria in particular. He said: "Iran continues to pose a major threat to the future of Syria and its identity, and if some international actors have interests, Iran has a dangerous regional project of dominance, by using sectarian militias and provoking devastating civil wars."
Highlighting Saudi Arabia's efforts to help the victims of the Syrian crisis, Prince Faisal said: "The Kingdom has contributed to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people by hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrian brothers in the Kingdom, who are treated as Saudi citizens in terms of employment and medical services."
"More than one hundred thousand Syrian students are enrolled in the Kingdom's schools and universities."
"The Kingdom's efforts included programs to support and care for millions of Syrians refugees to neighboring countries in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon," Prince Faisal pointed out.
Saudi foreign minister added: "These programs are implemented by King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, in coordination with the governments of those countries."
"The Kingdom's humanitarian assistance to our Syrian brothers amounted to about $ 1.15 billion."
