ABU DHABI — The United Arab Emirates reported 240 new coronavirus cases, the highest number in a day since the outbreak of the pandemic, raising the total number of infections in the country to 1,264, the state news agency WAM reported on Friday, quoting a statement from the Ministry of Health and Prevention. The ministry also announced one more death from the deadly virus, raising the total number of fatalities to nine in the country. The newly infected people are from different nationalities who are believed to have mingled with previously announced cases. They are in stable condition and receiving necessary health care. The ministry attributed the increase in infections mainly to the non-adherence to precautionary measures and physical distancing as well as home quarantine instructions. Some of them are, however, also linked to travel abroad. Meanwhile, 12 more patients have recovered after receiving the necessary health care, bringing the total number of recoveries to 108. Giving the details on the death, the ministry said that the deceased was a 51-year-old Asian citizen, who was suffering from chronic disease and kidney failure. The ministry said it is expressing its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and wish those infected a speedy recovery, while urging the public to cooperate with competent authorities and adhere to health instructions and guideline.
