Abdulrahman Al-Ali Saudi Gazette JEDDAH — Jeddah police have arrested several members of a gang suspected of stealing cars in the port city. According to the arrest report, a police unit patrolling the city's northern Obhur area became suspicious of a small sedan packed with multiple passengers. When officers asked the driver of the vehicle to pull over, he panicked and tried to speed off. The police unit gave chase and called for backup. After his vehicle was surrounded, the driver finally pulled over but was defiant and accused police officers of harassing him without any valid reason. He further claimed that he was late for work and was trying to drop his friends off when police attempted to pull him over. Officers calmed him down and said he was being pulled over on a routine check and would be on his way shortly. When asked to produce his driver's license, car registration and the ID cards of the passengers in the vehicle, the men were unable to comply and began acting confused. After giving officers contradicting answers, the men were escorted to a police station for further investigation where it was revealed that the car was stolen. The driver had initially claimed the car belonged to a relative but eventually admitted to stealing the car from underneath the Sitteen Street Bridge. At the time of the arrest, the group was using the vehicle to scout for other cars they could steal. Investigations continue.
