Abdulhadi Al-Suwayan Okaz/Saudi Gazette MADINAH — Local residents complain that abandoned wells in Madinah have become death traps for their children. The latest victim was a 4-year-old child who died after falling into a well in the village of Al-Qesaiba, Al-Henakiah governorate. Late last month, the Civil Defense rescue personnel had to use heavy equipment to save a girl who fell into a 60-meter deep abandoned well in the same locality. Citizens are demanding effective solutions to this problem, as there are many stories of children falling into these wells. Spokesman for Madinah Civil Defense, Col. Khalid Al-Jehani, said the Civil Defense is working hard to deal with this problem. A special committee is surveying these wells to identify their locations, he said. The Civil Defense has filled in 800 abandoned wells recently and has asked citizens for their assistance in informing them about the locations of such wells.
