Minister on forged degrees
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 03 - 2013

I totally agree with Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Abdulaziz Khoja when he refused to slander people who are suspected of holding forged degrees.
Anonymous people began posting the names of public figures on the Internet, accusing them of holding fake degree, master's and PhD certificates.
The actions of these people could have been with the intent of harming them for personal reasons and to malign their names. Or maybe they are trying to force people to lose confidence in public figures who are businessmen, Shoura Council members, media figures and those working in consultancy jobs.
But does not the minister agree that not revealing the names of real culprits led these people to attacking innocent men and women on the Internet?
The Saudi Council of Engineers revealed that it discovered more than 850 fake certificates. It also found that more than 15,000 expatriates working in the Kingdom in the engineering field are actually holding fake certificates.
The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties discovered 1,047 fake certificates in one year in the private health sector and 489 fake certificates in the public health sector.
Internet users were prompted to reveal the names because these two departments reduced the issue of fake certificates to mere statistics. This will encourage those with a personal grudge to put any name they want to malign on the Internet and accuse them of holding forged certificates.
We should reveal the names of the real culprits. Our religion enjoins us not to expose people who commit mistakes in their personal and family lives, but it also calls for justice.
Revealing the names of people who are holding fake certificates in engineering, medical and other fields is for the protection of society. We do not want to see a Saudi citizen going to an engineer who is holding a fake certificate to build a house for him and then the house collapsing. In the same way, we do not want to see someone going to a doctor holding a fake certificate and who then messes up his body.
The authorities should reveal names of culprits to protect society so they do not fall victim to them. It is also to protect the innocent people who studied for many years to earn their professional certificates.
More importantly, are these fake certificate holders going to be held accountable for stealing public money every month?
