18,000 beggars detained last year

RIYADH — Anti-beggary offices under the Ministry of Social Affairs apprehended more than 18,000 beggars last year, the ministry has said. Saudis accounted for 19 percent, while Saudi female beggars were more than 2,000. Riyadh had the largest number of captured beggars in the Kingdom with more than 10,000, followed by Jeddah with 3,000. The Social Affairs offices cooperate with the Ministry of Interior in apprehending beggars. Apprehended Saudi beggars are investigated and referred to the relevant authorities, while expatriate beggars are deported.
