Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has taken all measures to prevent import of horsemeat into the Kingdom. The authority is closely following reports on the involvement of some European companies in importing horsemeat as halal-slaughtered beef,” it said in a statement, Monday. “The authority's early warning center is on full alert to prevent this type of commercial fraud following the British government's confirmation about involvement of some agencies in the import of horsemeat passed on as beef,” the statement, carried by Saudi Press Agency, said. The authority noted that the Kingdom is currently importing beef and its products from three European states — The Netherlands, Ireland and Denmark. There are 29 companies licensed for importing beef from these countries to the Kingdom. According to reports, only one of these companies was found involved in exporting horsemeat. The authority has banned the company namely Liffey Meats from exporting meat to the Kingdom, the statement added. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has lifted ban on import of sheep and cow from Turkey.
