VINA DEL MAR, Chile — Rafael Nadal has taken a few shaky steps in a comeback he hopes will give him a fighting chance of winning his eighth French Open title. After being away from singles tennis for more than seven months while getting therapy on an injured left knee, Nadal defeated Federico Delbonis of Argentina 6-3, 6-2 Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the VTR Open. On Tuesday he advanced in doubles with partner Juan Monaco. Nadal was pushed and won only one point on clay in the first two games against Delbonis. “For me, Roland Garros (French Open) is light years away,” he said. “All I see is doubles tomorrow and my singles again here Friday.” Kavic upsets Baghdatis In Zagreb, Blaz Kavic of Slovenia rallied to upset sixth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis from Cyrpus 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 and reach his third career quarterfinal at the Zagreb Indoors Thursday. Baghdatis, the 2007 champion, served for the match at 5-4, but lost serve and Kavcic won a tiebreaker. Fourth-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria came from one set down to defeat Somdev Devvarman from India 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. Devvarman had a 5-3 lead in the tiebreaker, but then lost four points in a row. Robin Haase from the Netherlands defeated fifth-seeded Slovak Martin Klizan 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. On Wednesday, defending champion Mikhail Youzhny beat Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-2 in the second round to become the first quarterfinalist at the Zagreb Indoors. Earlier, in first round matches, sixth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus rallied to defeat Germany's Tobias Kamke 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4. Robin Haase of the Netherlands also came back from one set down to defeat Croatian wild card Antonio Veic 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Flavio Cipolla made it to the second round after Lukas Lacko of Slovakia — who reached the final in Zagreb last year — retired at 1-1 in the first set because of a back injury. — Agencies
