Alex Bogomolov Jr. fell in the PBZ Zagreb Indoors second round Thursday. The Russian lost to World No. 97 Lukas Lacko 6-0, 6-7(1), 6-1 in one hour and 55 minutes. Slovak Lacko, who will next meet seventh seed Robin Haase of the Netherlands, led by one set and 3-0. Bogomolov's compatriot, third seed Mikhail Youzhny, lost just 10 points on serve to defeat Slovenia's Grega Zemlja 6-1, 6-3 in 76 minutes. Defending champion and No. 4 seed Ivan Dodig prevailed against Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 after two hours and 37 minutes. Dodig prevented Garcia-Lopez from drawing level at 5-all in the decisive set, saving a break point. The two players had previously met last year in the Zagreb semifinals, a match the Croatian had also come back to win in a 6-4 third set. He went on to capture his first ATP World Tour title with victory over German Michael Berrer in the final. Another past champion, sixth seed Marcos Baghdatis, hit six aces past Poland's Lukasz Kubot in a 6-4, 6-2 win over 77 minutes. The Cypriot is through to his third ATP World Tour quarterfinal (or better) this year, having reached the same stage at the Brisbane International and the semifinals at the Apia International Sydney. Berdych in quarters In Montpellier, France, Tomas Berdych required just 56 minutes to beat No. 142-ranked Florent Serra 6-0, 6-2 Thursday for a place in the Open Sud de France quarterfinals. Berdych dropped 12 points on serve – saving all three break points he faced – and hit nine aces. It was his first match since reaching the Australian Open quarterfinals (l. to Nadal). The Czech will next challenge France's Nicolas Mahut, who knocked out sixth seed Florian Mayer of Germany 7-6 (3), 6-3 in 83 minutes. It was the first meeting in almost three years, since the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. Returning champion Gael Monfils, the No. 3 seed, fired 17 aces and won 84 per cent of points behind his first serve to close out a 6-3, 6-3 win over American Michael Russell.
