Ibrahim Mohammed Badawood Al-Madinah newspaper SOME people consider undercover traffic police as hostile enemies. What such people do not realize is that traffic police in unmarked cars do not know the real identities of drivers and only stop them solely based on their behavior on the road. Official statistics clearly show the success so far achieved by undercover traffic police in some regions. According to these statistics, the number of accidents has greatly decreased in areas where police in unmarked cars target drivers for speeding or other offenses. Based on this success, the department of undercover traffic police is currently seeking to expand its authority to go beyond apprehending those who exceed the speed limit, do not stop at traffic lights or violate any other traffic rules. Maj. Gen. Sulaiman Al-Ajlan, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic, said the work of one unit of undercover traffic police is equivalent to the work of three shifts of normal traffic police. He added that during the past six months undercover traffic police registered a total of 201,605 violations in the city of Riyadh alone. Undercover traffic police officers have been subject to various criticisms despite proving, without a doubt, that they reduce accidents and save our lives. We need to stop blaming them, accept responsibility for our actions on the road and support the police in its fight against unruly drivers.
