Saudi Gazette report JEDDAH — The Indian community in the Kingdom celebrated the country's 64th Republic Day with joy, enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. Special functions were held at the country's diplomatic missions and community schools across the Kingdom with large numbers of students and parents in attendance. Ambassador Hamid Ali Rao hoisted the tricolor at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh's Diplomatic Quarter Saturday morning. The function was attended by diplomats and students of Indian schools in the capital city as well as community members. A large of number of Indian nationals attended the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Consulate General in Jeddah. At the International Indian School in Jeddah, Consul General Faiz Ahmad Kidwai unfurled the national flag, which was soon followed by the singing of the national anthem. Deputy Consul General Mohammad Noor Rahman Sheikh, School Observer Mohammed Raghib Qureshi, Member of the Higher Board Dr. Karimuddin, chairman and members of the school management committee, school officials and media personnel were present on the occasion. Kausar Kidwai, wife of the consul general, was the guest of honor. In a symbolic act of spreading the message of freedom and peace, the consul general released a number of white pigeons. It was followed by an impressive march past by Boy Scouts and Girl Guides from the senior secondary blocks and the school contingents led by assistant head boy Areeb Ahmed Kashif and head girl Faiza Rizvi. Kidwai read out President Pranab Mukherjee's message to the nation, in which he emphasized the importance of gender equality, channelization of youth power and creation of jobs. “Education is the mantra that can transform our economic fortunes,” the president said in his address. He also touched upon the major issues facing the country today. Spectacular displays and colorful performances put up by students of both girls and boys sections marked the day. Melodious patriotic songs were presented by students of VI–VIII blocks, reminding the audience of the homeland and the sacrifices of soldiers. Boys from the I-V block and girls from the III–V block impressed spectators with wonderful drills and symbolic formations. The young citizens of India expressed their love and respect for the country with the formation of the tricolor. Folk dances depicting the rich tradition and culture of India were presented by the boys of the III-V block. Another highlight of the celebrations was an amazing martial arts display by boys from the VI–VIII block.
