Gaborik hat trick spurs Rangers to 4-3 win over Bruins
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 25 - 01 - 2013

NEW YORK — Marian Gaborik completed his hat trick with an overtime game-winner as the New York Rangers recorded their first victory of the season with a 4-3 triumph over the Boston Bruins Wednesday.
Gaborik tipped in his own shot just 27 seconds into the extra session as the Rangers celebrated in front of their home crowd and avoided losing their first three games of a campaign in 14 seasons.
Prior to his winning contribution, Czech winger Gaborik had helped New York forge a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first period.
After the Bruins (2-0-1) had rallied to tie the game in the second, Taylor Pyatt restored New York's lead before Nathan Horton forced overtime with his snapshot at 15:37 in the third.
New York (1-2-0) gained a degree of revenge with the win after suffering a season-opening defeat to Boston on Saturday.
Leafs 5, Penguins 2: James van Riemsdyk scored twice, James Reimer stopped 28 shots as Toronto spoiled Pittsburgh's home opener.
Clarke MacArthur, Mikhail Grabovski and Tyler Bozak also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Nikolai Kulemin added three assists.
Sidney Crosby and reigning NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin scored their first goals of the season for Pittsburgh, but the Penguins struggled with Toronto's speed and failed to play with the kind of discipline that highlighted opening weekend wins over Philadelphia and the New York Rangers.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 19 shots for the Penguins but Pittsburgh couldn't get off to its first 3-0 start in 18 years.
Coyotes 5, Blue Jackets 1: Steve Sullivan scored three goals, Oliver Ekman-Larsson had two goals and an assist, and Phoenix got its first win of the season.
The Coyotes were more sound defensively than in their first two games and created some good scoring chances because of it, sending 42 shots at Columbus goalie Steve Mason in his first start of the season.
Jason LaBarbera was sharp in his first game, stopping 21 shots for Phoenix after starter Mike Smith left midway through the first period with a lower-body injury.
Sullivan had his eighth career hat trick, Ekman-Larsson his first three-point game and nine players had at least a point to help the Coyotes avoid their first 0-3 start since 1985-86, when the franchise was still in Winnipeg.
Fedor Tyutin scored for Columbus in its first regulation loss of the season.
Canucks 3, Flames 2, SO: Zack Kassian scored in regulation and got the winner in the shootout, lifting Vancouver past Calgary.
Kassian scored the decisive shootout goal by deking Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff in the fifth round. Alex Burrows also scored in the shootout for Vancouver, and Cory Schneider secured the win by stopping Curtis Glencross on the final shootout attempt.
Mason Raymond also scored for the Canucks, giving them a 2-0 lead about halfway through the second period.
Alex Tanguay scored in regulation and had one in the shootout for Calgary, and Mikael Backlund had the tying goal with just under 4 minutes to go in the second period.
In another encounter Phoenix beat Columbus 5-1. — Agencies
