CAIRO – Al-Ismaliya Court of Appeals decided Wednesday to quash a death sentence handed down to a 43-year-old Saudi man who was convicted of stashing 22 kilograms of cocaine in his vehicle four years ago when entering the Egyptian border. The court said the case should be reconsidered after the Saudi Embassy in Cairo submitted strong evidence. The submitted evidence showed that the border security guards, who arrested the man with his wife and three children, did not comply with correct arrest procedures at the time. The death sentence was also handed down without the presence of any witnesses. The Saudi Embassy also presented evidence to the court showing the Saudi man had never been to Egypt before except when he was arrested. The embassy arranged for the wife and children to return to the Kingdom right after the man's arrest.
