Vismin, JIS-Edma top Tropicana tourney
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 16 - 08 - 2008

long intense tennis competition among various ladies tennis teams in Jeddah, Vismin Topseed and JIS-Edma remained undefeated to lead their respective categories in the Ladies Division of the ongoing Tropicana Tennis Tournament being held at the JIS Compound.
Vismin Topseed lived up to its name to complete a sweep of the five-match elimination rounds of the Ladies Mixed Division by demolishing JIS-Alice 3-0 during the weekend games. Powered by its captain Lorna Lladones and her partner Tracy Atienza, a budding tennis player, Vismin sealed the first set 8-4. The undefeated tandem of Gemma Aglanao and Annie Amor, best doubles candidate, stamped their supremacy in B1 category in the second set when they blanked Alice Toling and Evie Abitong 8-0 to clinch the match. Maying Amor and Yabs Sinajon wrapped up the third set with an 8-5 victory over Nadia Al-Saud and Sheila Antenor.
In the other court Saudia-Sarawat Synergy Mixed Team bounced back from the previous day's loss to KAMC, by beating Delta (Erfan) team 2-1. Alta Coats and Glecy Bercasio started the game for Saudia Tennis Club and surprised Delta's Ely Dominguez and Nieves Ubasa with their consistent ground strokes to grab the first set 8-5. Veteran B1 players Gina Woods and Joy Siongco beat the younger duo of Fenn dela Torre and Edith Espina, who showed remarkable fighting spirit despite their lower classification, to level the match at 1-all. In the deciding set, Saudia captain Yeye Balde and partner Dang Bangit brushed aside the pair of Vangie Reyes and Del to nail victory and assured themselves of a slot in the final round. Delta (Erfan) has now to win the last match against KAMC in order to stay in contention for the final four.
Meanwhile, the unexpected surge of JIS-Edma Ladion team in Category C continued with a 3-0 win-loss record to remain undefeated in its Group B, with the recent thumping of KAMC-1 team 2-1 and avengig the defeat in the finals by its members against the same team of KAMC in the recent AFTPA tourney. The JIS pair of Ely Dominguez and Tracy Atienza notched the first win by edging Ria and Ella 8-4. KAMC's strongest pair of Weng and Ashley failed to raise their game to level the match and lost 5-8 to the indomitable pair of Coy Usman and Beng Tumale. With the win and the No. 1 ranking, JIS Edma will be up against Fame in the quarterfinals which will start the coming weekend. In Group A, however, there is no clear leader as No. 1 position is still a toss-up among three contenders JIS-Lyn, Saudia-Sarawat and ALJ-Toyota.
A record of over a hundred lady tennis players with 15 teams in two categories C and Mixed Division are participating in the event. Each team is composed of 8 players, with 3 pairs plus 2 reserve players and they play a best-of-3 pairs format.
This tournament, which started on July 11 and will last on August 29. Organized by JISSITC, this tennis event is primarily sponsored by Tropicana Juice, with Racquet Shop of Delta Marketing and Lipton Tea of Unilever Arabia as co-sponsors. __
