AHMEDABAD — Kevin Pietersen scored a brisk 110 to help launch England to 408-3 against Haryana on the opening day of a four-day game Thursday. Pietersen smashed 16 fours and three sixes off 94 balls after openers Alastair Cook and Nick Compton put on a 166-run stand, in a boost to England's confidence in its last practice match before the four-Test series. Skipper Cook, who had scored 119 in the tour-opening three-day game against India A, missed a second ton on tour when he was dismissed for 97 by off-spinner Jayant Yadav. Compton strengthened his case for a Test berth by scoring 74 after an unbeaten 64 in the previous game against Mumbai A. Bangladesh picks 2 rookies Off-spinner Sohag Gazi and medium-pacer Abul Hasan are the only uncapped players selected in Bangladesh's squad for the first Test against West Indies next week. Mushfiqur Rahim was retained as captain in the 14-player squad announced Thursday by selectors for the Test, which starts Tuesday at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Chief Selector Akram Khan said the 20-year-old Hasan played four Twenty20 internationals for Bangladesh this year and has a good record of taking wickets at domestic level. The 21-year-old Gazi has never played an international for Bangladesh but he has been described by Khan as a “genuine” off-spinner who could play a significant role against West Indies. The two sides will contest two Tests, five One-Day Internationals and a Twenty20 match.
