Smith returns, Parnell out of World Twenty20
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 01 - 04 - 2010

Graeme Smith will be fit to lead South Africa in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies next month, but left-arm fast bowler Wayne Parnell was not included in the South African squad announced Wednesday.
Smith suffered a broken finger while playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League while Parnell had to return home without playing a game for the Delhi Daredevils because of a groin injury.
Big-hitting all-rounder Justin Kemp was also ruled out after being injured in the IPL. He hurt his back while playing for the Chennai Super Kings.
The South African squad includes one uncapped player in swing bowler Juan ‘Rusty' Theron, who has impressed with his bowling in the “death” overs for the Warriors, South Africa's domestic Twenty20 champions.
The squad: Graeme Smith (captain), Jacques Kallis (vice captain), Lungile Bosman, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Rory Kleinveldt, Charl Langeveldt, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Juan Theron, Roelof van der Merwe.
Lanka caps Chandimal
Sri Lanka has called up uncapped wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal in their 15-man squad for next month's Twenty20 World Cup.
The highly-rated 20-year-old was included in the squad named by selectors Wednesday after scoring 320 runs at an average of 53.33 in Sri Lanka's domestic T20 league.
The squad also includes the vastly experience Sanath Jayasuriya, now aged 40, who is campaigning to become a member of parliament in Sri Lanka's parliamentary elections.
Sri Lanka included three specialist spinners in their squad, including off-spinner Suraj Randiv in addition to regulars Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis.
The squad: Kumar Sangakkara (captain), Muttiah Muralitharan, Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Mathews, Thissera Perera, Suraj Randiv, Dinesh Chandimal, Nuwan Kulasekera, Lasith Malinga, Chinthaka Jayasinghe, Chamara Kapugedera, Ajantha Mendis, Chanaka Welegedera.
England drops prior
England dropped Matt Prior for the World Twenty20 and instead selected Craig Kieswetter as its wicketkeeper in the 15-man squad.
The selectors also picked newcomer Michael Lumb among the batsmen, recalled Ravi Bopara for his batting and bowling and added Michael Yardy as an extra spinner in the tournament that starts April 30 in West Indies.
Prior's omission is the only real surprise because he is a fast scoring batsman, although national selector Geoff Miller says the player is likely to remain in the test squad. The South African-born Kieswetter has impressed in England's one-day team, scoring a century on the recent tour of Bangladesh.
Squad: Paul Collingwood (captain), James Anderson, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Craig Kieswetter, Michael Lumb, Eoin Morgan, Kevin Pietersen, Ajmal Shahzad, Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Luke Wright, Michael Yardy.
Ashraful recalled
Bangladesh has recalled former captain Mohammad Ashraful to its 15-man squad for the upcoming World Twenty20 championship Tuesday.
Left-arm pacer Syed Rasel also returned to the side after missing out on the New Zealand tour and England series, while left-arm spinner Mohammad Sohrawordi and batsman Jahirul Islam retained their places in the Twenty20 squad.
The squad: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes, Jahirul Islam, Mohammad Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abdur Razzak, Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain, Syed Rasel and Mohammad Sohrawordi.
